About the Gold Coast Open
One of Australia’s biggest events, the Gold Coast Open was started in 1993 by Graeme Gardiner and the Gold Coast Chess Club. Following the Gold Coast Chess Club’s closure, Gardiner Chess took over the running of the event on an ongoing basis to ensure that opportunities for players continued to be provided.
The event has played host to many top level players over the years and has provided Norm possibilities since 2017, when GM Temur Kuybokarov picked up one of his GM Norms on his way to the title.
Gardiner Chess is the organising body behind the Gold Coast Open. Gardiner Chess is one of the largest chess coaching providers in Australia, and runs the Official Queensland Inter-School State Championships, weekend events, holiday programs and sells chess equipment around Australia.
